O source of all justice and mercy,
On this day devoted to remembering the struggle for equal treatment
For our brothers and sisters--
The descendants of those kept in slavery--
We ask that our observance be centered upon you,
Giver of all good gifts.
We ask that you give your people justice—
That you help us end oppression--
But because of our sinfulness,
We may speak of justice, but
It is your mercy that we truly desire.
Across this vast and varied land,
May your mercy rain upon us and our fellow citizens.
May our memorial to those who advanced freedom and equality
Be an occasion of inner clarity
Centering upon you.
