Prayer for Our Bodies

O great creator, O giver of all good gifts,

We thank you for these our bodies,

For these organs, for this brain,

This mouth and tongue--

So fashioned as to cry out your specific glory.

We ask that you keep us in health

As we explore our bodies,

As we strive to grasp the power

Of the mysteries resting upon us

And residing within us.

May we ever marvel at the wondrous pump

That is our heart.

May we grow in reverence for the muscle,

The humble nail, the coursing blood,

Eye’s insight of color, ear’s harvest of music,

Nose’s savor of scent,

And hand’s grasp.

May we increase in the holiness

Which comes from a true appreciation

Of the complexity and beauty

Of the work of your hands.
