The Sky In Florida
March, 2004

The sky in Florida possesses the observer
Takes hold
Screws its timeless Greek and Arabic self, east to west
Into the mind
So slowly, so inevitably, so seductively.

The sky in Florida overwhelms mind.
In such moments
When the night stuffs its sack of humility
One knows that God is near.

The sky in Florida speaks loudly and clearly
Tells of the surf
Groaning against rough shore
Evening out sand’s quotients
A baker separating cosmic day’s dough.

The sky in Florida speaks loudly and clearly
Emphasizing obscure clusters
Neglected in my hurry
Scolding me for ignoring the least of its children.

The sky in Florida stands out as a bastion
A bulwark against ignorance and sin.
