The Daylilies at Independence Park

Daylilies in bloom, abundant, rich in color,

Growing, prospering in the botanic garden,

Offering up their unlikely blooms freely,

Civic, political, municipal, free for all. 

Rich color, frank, open faces.

Daylilies in bloom, but

True to their name, day will end, and

Petals will curl in upon themselves,

Fists clutching, defying time’s passing,

Holding much beauty in their dying grasp.
