Pondering the Will of God

For certain there is a God,

Who made all this and keeps it in being,

Causing the earth to turn so that at night

The moon calls me to wonder and ponder, and

When the moon is away,

The Milky Way calls me to worship its maker.

This Creator and Sustainer is a mystery.

It--I started to write “He”—practices the high art

Of cosmic indifference,

Making and sustaining for a while, and

Then visiting upon the creatures flood,

Wildfires, earthquakes, epidemics, pests,

Leaving me, as I live out my consciousness

In amazement, to know how fickle,

How fragile, all life is.
