Autumn Comes

As gradual, soft, and quiet as a revolution of the moon,

Autumn comes, bringing with it shorter days, falling leaves

Declining vigor in grasses and vines.

Autumn cools the earth,

Inviting furrows to rest and wait.

Soon there will be chill upon the furrows,

Soon there will be a deeper coolness

That will prepare the earth for winter frost,

Readying the earth for December’s freeze.
