Obituary

Mr. Sitges Paul Haydel, 92, loving husband, father and grandfather, was taken to heaven on the morning of Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at his home in Franklin. He was born on September 26, 1915 in Glencoe, La. and moved to Franklin at an early age.

After attending Crowell Public School for a short time, he enrolled at Hanson Memorial High School, from which he graduated in 1937. After serving for four years in the U.S. Army, he was employed as a manager of the Lee C. Firmin grocery store on Willow Street in Franklin. In 1952 he began work as an operator at Cabot Corp. from which he retired in 1976.

Sitges was a devout Catholic and an active and dedicated member of the Church of Assumption. He was a regular attendant at holy hour devotions. He served as an usher for 35 years and as a cook for the St. Joseph Altar. Throughout his life he was a faithful supporter of Hanson High School and was active in encouraging the school’s athletic program. He was a fan of Notre Dame football and of the Atlanta Braves baseball team. Sitges was an accomplished cook and took great pleasure in sharing his dishes with friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emile Haydel and Virginia Broussard Haydel; brothers, Hinton, Hardy, Oren, Rufus, Emile, and Edsel Haydel; and sisters, Ada Cobb and Virginia Senette.

He is survived by his widow, Verdie Bolner Haydel of Franklin; one brother, Johnny Haydel of Franklin; and one sister, Blanche Boudreaux of Franklin; two sons, Paul Hardy Haydel and Crandall Haydel, both of Franklin; two daughters, Penny Haydel Stanford of Sunset and Mary Lee Haydel Comeaux of Lafayette; one daughter-in-law, Donna Naquin Haydel of Franklin; two sons-in-law, Herman Stanford of Sunset and Dale Comeaux of Lafayette; grandchildren, Tanya Haydel Barrilleaux, Scott Haydel, Marlene Haydel, Rod Paul Landen, Dr. Jill Gibson, Andy, Amy and Amanda Stanford, Christine Strentz and Torrey and Kayla Haydel; and nine great grandchildren.

The family requests that visitation be observed Thursday, February 14, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at Ibert’s Mortuary, with a rosary being prayed at 1 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, February 14, at 2 p.m., at the Church of the Assumption, with Father Billy Ruskoski officiating the services. Burial will follow in the Franklin Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hanson Memorial High School, 903 Anderson St., Franklin, La. 70538 or St. John Elementary, 924 Main St., Franklin, La. 70538.

Pallbearers are Scott Haydel, Torrey Haydel, Walton Moss, Brad Breaux, Cody Martin and Todd Gibson. Honorary pallbearers are Al Luke and Tim Hebert.

The family would like to thank the following dedicated caregivers: Connie Bourque, Sara Eguizabal, Whitney Barrow, Shirley Jackson, Cathy Lamaison and the staff of Franklin Home Care. They wish to thank also Drs. Steven McPherson, Brent Allain and Jonathan Stein.

He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
