On this winter day the great sun star comes,
Radiant, indifferent lover, and the source of
all our physical radiance
To sport for the day, arcing upon its splendid
track in the sky.
It feeds, lights, and warms--yes, but
It practices its unique species of sun sorcery:
Giving food, light and warmth to Pharo, Alexaner,
and Caesar, and
Taking for his pay their youth, power, and
dreams.
Pharo, Alexander, and Caesar have paid
And are no more.
They have left only glory-laden stories,
and
Monuments marking their short stay among these
stones.
