Morning in Rockport

Bright light given abundantly,

Freely, without cost

Covers, permeates Rockport’s world.

There is laughter from the laughing gulls,

There is traffic on the streets,

There is movement in civic fields

As Rockport awakes.

The day will soon be fully alive,

The sun will rise and burn

All remaining signs of night’s late life.

Gulls will laugh, pelicans will circle

Marking ephemeral patterns in the day’s sky.

And then afternoon:

Light will peak,

Gulls’ laughing will assume a new tone,

The day will wear down

To make room for the coming of another night.
