Hay Fields

Humble hay fields also hold

Their lessons beneath their signs.

Their signs are brown and burnt-grey,

Arrayed upon the earth’s accepting face.

From the road the hay field teaches

Humility, fortitude in the face of rain and frost,

The value of waiting for sun and rain,

The great advantage of holding still,

The lesson that our sight of them is fleeting,

That we are together in this moment

Held by sight, time, hunger, and beauty.
