Stephen, First
Martyr
Stephen’s
persecutors,
Filled with
righteous passion,
Having cast his
cloak carelessly
At the feet of
Saul,
Chose their
stones
While Stephen
looked up to heaven, and
Just before the
stones began to hail,
Prayed the
martyr’s prayer:
Thanking the
Creator for the special honor
Of being the
first to die.
Saul stood
there,
Thinking of the
road to Damascus,
While approving
the stoning,
Justifying in
his hard heart
The prescribed
punishment
Of gentle,
reverent Stephen.
